Basement Vibrations

For Basement Vibrations, a series of underground electronic events produced by Dem Bois in Salamanca, we created a poster series that drew on Hobart’s deep maritime history. The inspiration came from an illustrated dictionary of nautical flags — a system traditionally used for urgent communication at sea.

We reinterpreted these signals in the context of an electronic club night, transforming their meanings into intriguing, playful statements:

U — You are running into danger
K — I wish to communicate
X — Stop carrying out your intentions

The result was a visual identity that connected the venue’s waterfront location with the energy of the underground scene. By abstracting these historic flag symbols into a contemporary design language, the posters created both familiarity and mystery — drawing audiences in and setting the tone for a distinctive music experience.
